Shubha Mudgal

Shobha Mudgal was born in Allahabad in 1959. She was born in afamily of academicians. Both her parents and also her paternal grandparent wrer proffesors in English pept. Of Allahabad University.

She has been awarded the 1996 National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Music Direction for 'Amrit Beej', the 1998 Gold Plaque Award for Special Achievement in Music, at the 34th Chicago International Film Festival, for her music in the film Dance of the Wind (1997), and the Padma Shri in 2000. She is also close to movements like ANHAD and SAHMAT.

Early life

Born in an academic family to Skand and Jaya Gupta in Allahabad. Both her parents were Professors of English Literature at Allahabad University, with deep interest in Classical Hindustani Music and Kathak. Her paternal grandfather, Prof. P. C. Gupta was also a Professor at Allahabad University.

She was a student of St. Mary’s Convent and learned Kathak as most of the Allahabad girls did in those days.She had a very individualistic attitude and used to replybto quaries about her style with the retort that "hum apne gharane ki nachte hain".Later she switched to classical music as her vocation of choice. Her first traditional guru was Pt. Ramshreya Jha in Allahabad.

After schooling she went to Delhi University for Graduation.Her musical education was under Pt. Vinaya Chandra Mudgalya on Pt. Ramshreya,s advice.Pandit Vinay Chandra had started Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in New Delhi in 1939.

Performing career

Her first performance as Hindustani classical singer was in 1980s.and by1990s she earned a reputation of talented singer.Khayal and Thumri are her favourite forms ofmusic but she also experimented with other forms like pop andfusion varieties. She did not want to be restricted to one kind of music.
Along with her recordings and concerts ,Shobha Mudgal also runs a website called raagsangeet.com for lovers of classical music.

Mudgal sang the title track of Star Plus's No.1 serial Diya Aur Baati Hum along with Kailash Kher. It is a very soulful, classical-based Rajasthani folk song. She also give her voice to Mystic India Film By BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and Imax.

Personal life

After graduation she married Pt. Mudgalya, son Mukul Mudgal who retired as chief justice of Punjab andHaryana.Later she got divorced from him and married Aneesh Pradhan She has one son ,Dhaval, from her first marriageBut continued her training under Pt. VasantThakur inelhi and informally with othet exponents and established singers such as Pt.Jitendera Abhisheki, Naina Devi and Pt.Kumar Gandharva.
